Fatima Laher has been named Group Executive: Group Legal by MTN Group, effective October 1, 2022. Fatima rejoins MTN after six years at Samsung Electronics, where she was Head of Africa Disputes.

“Fatima is adept at providing expert strategic and innovative advice to senior leadership in the prestigious institutions she has worked for locally and internationally,” said Lele Modise, Group Chief Legal, and Regulatory Officer.

“As Executive: Group Legal, Fatima will assist in overseeing all legal areas and managing legal risk, as well as supporting strategic projects and initiatives across MTN Group and the implementation of the Group Legal & Regulatory strategy,” Modise concluded.

Fatima is an experienced multi-skilled Legal Executive with expertise in a wide range of areas, including but not limited to managing high-value cross-border litigation, legal risk mitigation and corporate investigations, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial law.

Fatima comes to MTN with over 25 years of legal experience, having worked at pan-African (Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group, Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Africa) and international law firms (Herbert Smith Freehills LLP (Dubai) and Norton Rose Fulbright LLP) (Dubai). She previously worked as a Partner (Director) at Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group, where she was in charge of corporate compliance and investigations, and as an Executive: Group Commercial Legal, Regulatory, and Compliance at MTN Group.

Fatima is a South African High Court Admitted Attorney. She has a Master of Laws, Honours in Law, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
