Mercedes-Benz is planning to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) in Egypt. The country’s Ministry of Trade made the information public.

The country is a promising market, says Gerd Bitterlich, president, and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Egypt. The strategy is in line with Egypt’s goal of growing its automobile industry.

A national development strategy for the automotive industry was announced in 2021. It intends to advance Egypt’s automotive manufacturing capabilities. There are currently automobile assembly plants in the country, but the government wants to use more local components and create solar and hybrid vehicles.

Egypt’s car output declined dramatically from 2009 to 2020, according to CEIC Data. Production fell from 92,300 units in 2009 to 23,700 units in 2020.
