Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s top and fastest expanding airline, is marking the 50th anniversary of its service to the United Kingdom, which began in April 1973. Ethiopian Airlines’ debut flight arrived at London-Heathrow aboard a Boeing 720-B, with two flights per week to begin. The flight was initially operated with First Class and Economy Class through Cairo, Rome, and Frankfurt.
Ethiopian now operates daily non-stop A350 Airbus flights from London Heathrow (Terminal 2) to Addis Abeba, as well as four weekly B787 Dreamliner flights from Manchester (Terminal 2) to Addis Abeba, carrying over 10,000 passengers each month and connecting to over 60 African destinations.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew commented on the anniversary, saying, “Positioned as the Heart of Europe, the UK has always been a strong and important market for Ethiopian Airlines.” Celebrating 50 years is a testament to our commitment to servicing the United Kingdom with both passenger and freighter operations. As we celebrate our half-century anniversary in the UK, we look forward to expanding our service to the Kingdom with new locations and flights.”

“This is a big anniversary for Ethiopian Airlines because it highlights our unwavering commitment to serving the UK,” said Henock Woubishet, Area Manager UK and Ireland. We will be commemorating this milestone with a series of activities over the remainder of the year, including FAM trips, campaigns, and promotions. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the traveling public and our partners in the UK travel sector for their support over the years.”

Ethiopian currently serves over 150 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations, including 21 cities in Europe.
